As far as accommodation is concerned, there are numerous facilities available, from hotels, guest houses, self service units to holiday resorts where the visitors can expect not only professional service, but the old world charm and hospitality for which the Olifantsriver is so well known.
Part of the diversity of the area lies in the fact that part of the Western border is formed by the Atlantic ocean. If you have never heard of Doringbaai, Strandfontein or Bakoond, you have not yet experienced the “real” West Coast - unique small fishermen's villages where one can indulge oneself in the most amazing seafood imaginable - fat juicy mussels, mouth watering crayfish and fresh “harders” straight from the sea's larder.
The coastal area is an absolute bird watcher's paradise. From July whales can be regularly seen in the many small bays, seeking shelter on their migratory journey.
The beaches in the area are still a pristine white, with few visitors around and only the sea gulls to keep you company while you watch the glorious sunsets.
There is so much to see in the Olifantsriver area that a stay of more than just a day or two is a must. Apart from the wine route there are 4x4 routes, various other outdoor activities, historical buildings to visit, as well as the world's largest succulent nursery. If all this is not enough to keep you busy, then a raft trip down the Doringriver should get rid of any extra adrenalin.
